Universities warned against selling
degrees to politicians
The government has put on notice
Universities which have been giving degrees to politicians without allowing
them to go through the actual studying.
The Principle Secretary for the
Ministry of Information Communications and Technology (ICT) Sammy Itemere said
that the trend is watering down the education system in this country and this
should come to an end.
Itemere who was the chief guest at
the 6th graduation ceremony of Zetech University noted that the government is
on the lookout for such universities and added that a stern action will be
taken to any institution of higher learning found guilty of the act.
He said that his colleague in the
Ministry of education Fred Matiang’i is working very hard to restore the dented
image of the country’s education system and the politicians should be helping
in the course instead of buying degrees.
The PS urged the universities to
support the government in its initiatives by creating programs where Kenyans
can access cheap and quality education to accommodate the low earning members
of society.
Meanwhile Juja Member of Parliament
Francis Munyua Waititu who graduated at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture
and Technology (JKUAT) with a Bachelor of Science in Leadership and governance
said that every politician is entitled to constitutional knowledge so as to
defend the constitution as he pledged when he was elected in office.
Munyua said that the legislators in
the National Assembly should all be learned raising concerns that only 80% of
parliamentarians have degrees like his and that a bill is oncoming to ensure no
one vies for the parliamentary seat without a degree.
He says that he is now ready to face
any task mandated to him by the government constitutionally as he has full
knowledge and called upon the government to takea stern action universities
selling degrees to politicians
